Ben and Sarah

We met when we were working as canine attendants at the SPCA in Auckland. It quickly became clear that we had very similar outlooks on life, and that our philosophies on taking care of animals were also aligned. So we owe our romance and the life we have built together in Greytown to dogs – we have a lot to be thankful to them for!

Our work at the SPCA has given us unique dog handling experience. We have dealt with dogs large and small, fearful, confident, stressed, curious, unsocialised and everything in between. Our jobs involved working with the dogs from the moment they entered the SPCA Village until they found their new home.

Working with dogs every day that had been abandoned, neglected and abused taught us a great deal about how to help them overcome these issues and to build trust and confidence in their world. Sometimes animals were surrendered to us that had come from loving homes but their owners could no longer care for them. These dogs were often the most difficult to settle and to build rapport with and, again, they taught us a lot about how to help them and the importance of the human/dog bond.

We also worked closely with the vets and hospital staff – administering medications and vaccinations, handling dogs during vet checks and procedures, taking care of the dogs prior to and after surgery and generally keeping an eye on their everyday health. Sarah has also completed a first aid course for companion animals so that she is able to assist in an emergency until the animal can be taken to a vet.

We have both completed a dangerous dog-handling course and Sarah has a certificate in canine massage. We are committed to staying in touch with the amazing new research that is being done on dog training, behaviour and psychology. Our training and handling philosophy is one of positive reinforcement – we simply don’t believe that pain, fear or punishment have any place in our relationships with dogs. Sarah is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers of New Zealand.

Flick

Flick is a heading dog who was found lying on the side of the road with terrible wounds all over her body. She was brought to the SPCA and had several operations to fix her injuries. She was such a character that she quickly became a favourite with staff, despite the fact that she was difficult to manage and had no off-switch! Ben fostered her to help her settle in a home environment. After 5 months of hard work and teaching her about face kisses and the joys of chilling out, he decided to adopt her. When Sarah came along, Flick quickly realised the value of having two humans to attend to her whims and desires. In her spare time she enjoys herding flies, making friends with cats, swimming and waking up her humans 30 seconds before the alarm goes off in the morning. Flick is great at teaching other dogs how to behave – she can be quite bossy! – and she is invaluable in making them feel comfortable in unfamiliar situations and integrating them into the family.

Holly

Holly is lab cross who was rescued by an SPCA inspector when she was 3 months old. She was minutes from death, having been left for a week under a plank of wood with a tight cord wrapped around her neck, resulting in the worst collar wound we had ever seen. Holly quickly won hearts at the SPCA and became an appeal dog, raising close to $90,000 for the organisation! But she struggled with the big wide world that had not treated her kindly. So we fostered her to help her build trust and confidence and… well, here she is still with us. We just couldn’t let her go – she is such a sweet, funny girl. In her spare time she likes to chew things – ALL the things – get Flick to chase her, burrow under blankets and get tummy rubs. She is still a bit nervous about meeting new people, but she loves other dogs, is a great canine communicator and she’s learning more all the time. Read more about Holly's story and how far she has come.
